The day to day activities are determined by the center’s active participants, with input from the program director. Thanks to Dr. Thomas D. Parke, a founder of Children’s Hospital and a specialist in pediatric diseases, there has been a neighborhood library on the corner of 11th Avenue South and 19th Street since 1945. It was through their deep love of libraries and intellectual pursuits that Dr. Parke and his wife Amy Smith gave their home to the city for use as a branch library. Parke’s endowment also included a generous amount of money for buying books, and partially funded a new building which replaced the house in 1955. This building served the community for almost 40 years. The present building, designed to complement existing local structures, opened its doors on March 17, 1996.

The South Precinct covers an area of approximately 46 square miles from Inverness to Loveman Village and from Oxmoor Valley to Kingston. It borders the North, East, and West Precincts as well as the cities of Homewood, Mt. Brook, Bessemer, and Hoover, and Jefferson and Shelby counties. Interstates 20, 59, 65, and 459; and US Highways 31 and 280 traffic runs through the South Precinct. The South Precinct has approximately 120 sworn and civilian employees. Included are neighborhood beat officers and a Burglary Task Force and a UBEV/Robbery Task Force who collaborate with the beat officers, the Detective Bureau, UAB and Homewood Police, ION Video, and CAP to prevent and solve crimes. These officers compile intelligence, conduct surveillance, serve outstanding warrants, and follow up on Part I Offenses. The South Precinct also has four HICOPP units who patrol the Loveman Village, Avondale, Kingston, and Southtown public housing units.

Vulcan, Birmingham Alabama’s colossal statue is the world’s largest cast iron statue and considered one of the most memorable works of civic art in the United States.
But by 1999, the 50-ton statue was in desperate need of repair. The surrounding 10-acre park was closed. Vulcan was removed from his pedestal. Realizing Vulcan’s importance to the region’s history, city leaders sought public support for its restoration, forming the non-profit Vulcan Park Foundation. The foundation would oversee a master plan to return this colossal statue to his 1904 grandeur. They would also create a dynamic educational park complex interpreting Alabama’s rich industrial history for both residents and visitors from across the globe.
Today, thanks to public-private partnerships and a $15.5 million campaign, this beloved symbol of Birmingham and the nation’s iron and steel industry stands preserved and proud as the centerpiece of it rehabilitated and expanded park, now referred to as Vulcan Park and Museum.

Thanks to Dr. Thomas D. Parke, a founder of Children’s Hospital and a specialist in pediatric diseases, there has been a neighborhood library on the corner of 11th Avenue South and 19th Street since 1945. It was through their deep love of libraries and intellectual pursuits that Dr. Parke and his wife Amy Smith gave their home to the city for use as a branch library. Parke’s endowment also included a generous amount of money for buying books, and partially funded a new building which replaced the house in 1955. This building served the community for almost 40 years. The present building, designed to complement existing local structures, opened its doors on March 17, 1996.

The South Precinct covers an area of approximately 46 square miles from Inverness to Loveman Village and from Oxmoor Valley to Kingston. It borders the North, East, and West Precincts as well as the cities of Homewood, Mt. Brook, Bessemer, and Hoover, and Jefferson and Shelby counties. Interstates 20, 59, 65, and 459; and US Highways 31 and 280 traffic runs through the South Precinct. The South Precinct has approximately 120 sworn and civilian employees. Included are neighborhood beat officers and a Burglary Task Force and a UBEV/Robbery Task Force who collaborate with the beat officers, the Detective Bureau, UAB and Homewood Police, ION Video, and CAP to prevent and solve crimes. These officers compile intelligence, conduct surveillance, serve outstanding warrants, and follow up on Part I Offenses. The South Precinct also has four HICOPP units who patrol the Loveman Village, Avondale, Kingston, and Southtown public housing units.

Vulcan, Birmingham Alabama’s colossal statue is the world’s largest cast iron statue and considered one of the most memorable works of civic art in the United States.
But by 1999, the 50-ton statue was in desperate need of repair. The surrounding 10-acre park was closed. Vulcan was removed from his pedestal. Realizing Vulcan’s importance to the region’s history, city leaders sought public support for its restoration, forming the non-profit Vulcan Park Foundation. The foundation would oversee a master plan to return this colossal statue to his 1904 grandeur. They would also create a dynamic educational park complex interpreting Alabama’s rich industrial history for both residents and visitors from across the globe.
Today, thanks to public-private partnerships and a $15.5 million campaign, this beloved symbol of Birmingham and the nation’s iron and steel industry stands preserved and proud as the centerpiece of it rehabilitated and expanded park, now referred to as Vulcan Park and Museum.
